Introducing The Puroresu History Project

‘Celebrating 60 years of Puroresu September 30th 1951 – September 30th 2011’

In September 1951, a group of seven American wrestlers, along with former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe Lewis, headed to Japan to run a series of wrestling shows to entertain US servicemen stationed in the country during the Korean War. Promoted with the Torii Oasis Shriner’s Club of Tokyo, the first of these shows to be open to the public took place on September 30th 1951. While there had been various attempts at promoting wrestling in Japan going back to the 1880’s, the shows began what we now know as Puroresu. September 30th 2011 will be the 60th Anniversary of their first show and the birth of Puroresu. The Puroresu History Project has been established to record, remember and celebrate as much as possible of this sixty years of Puroresu History.

The current plans have the project running as three strands:

puroresuhistory.com – the eventual repository of all the information gathered, right now the home of the project blog.

Puroresu History Network – A network of websites which cover Puroresu history and have contributed to the project in any way.

Puroresu History Research Centre – This is the forum where anyone interested in Puroresu History can join and help to contribute to the information gathered for puroresuhistory.com. Anyone who posts new information to the forum will be full acknowledged for any contributions they make.

The first major milestone of the project is the planning and construction of a results database for the past 60 years of Puroresu. Beyond that, there is so much that could be captured, recorded and presented in Puroresu history.

It is hoped that in the course of the next year, in the run up to the 60th anniversary of Puroresu, that a significant amount of new and existing information can be gathered in the Puroresu History Research Centre to develop puroresuhistory.com as the most complete guide to Puroresu history ever created.
